On the left half of the plain the goblin host stands a thousand and more strong, a dense mass of short, hunched, green-skinned bodies packed shoulder to shoulder in ragged rusted-iron and boiled leather, all of them facing right toward the enemy, and above their heads a bristling field of raised short swords catches the red light in a thousand small cold glints; the nearest ranks are large enough in frame to read individual snarling upturned faces, crooked noses and bared teeth, while the far ranks compress into a single textured carpet of blades and bodies. On the right half of the plain the elven host stands a thousand and more strong, taller and slender, arrayed in long disciplined ranks of silver-and-pale-gold armour with tall curved bows held upright in their hands and quivers over their shoulders, all of them facing left, their bow staves and arrowheads glinting the same red along the whole line; the nearest elves are large enough to read their long pointed ears, narrow sharp faces and braided pale hair, the far ranks thinning into a pale shining band across the grass. Between the two hosts a wide strip of open ground lies empty, and that strip is where the ground is covered in blood: broad smeared pools and spattered arcs of dark wet red soak the grass and the churned mud, the pools holding a mirror-flat red reflection of the moon above while the grass blades around them are matted and bent down under the weight. The plain is ringed in on every side: a dense dark forest presses along the left and rear edges, its treetops massing into a black ragged wall; on the right a wide still lake lies flat and black, carrying a long trembling red column of moonlight down its surface; and beyond the far edge of the plain grey rock ridges rise, and on the highest crag a mighty castle stands, its towers, curtain walls and spires silhouetted sharp against the sky, a few small windows lit a dim warm orange that is the only colour in the frame not red, green or black. The entire scene is lit by the light of a huge low red moon hanging above the rock ridge, and the moon is the sole light source: its light strikes the plain at a shallow raking angle from the upper right, so every figure and every blade throws a long thin shadow stretching left and away, the castle's crag casts a black wedge down across the far grass, and beyond the moon's reach the forest and the far lake shore fall into absolute darkness. The palette admits only deep blood red, cold desaturated green, iron grey and black, with the tiny orange window-lights as the single warm exception. The single judgeable physics: the blood pools are liquid and still, so the moon's reflection lies in them sharper and brighter than the duller moonlit grass around them. Epic, grim.
