She is the only living figure, centered but off-balance: her weight rides on her left leg, right knee bent with the toe of that foot resting on the floor, hip cocked sharply to the left. Her right hand sits flat on her hip, thumb hooked over the waistband of the ruffled skirt; her left forearm is lifted across her chest and her index finger presses into the center of her lower lip, denting it. Her chin is tipped down, and her eyes look down the line of her own face toward the viewer, lids half-lowered, one brow lifted higher than the other so the pout reads as a dare rather than a sulk. Her lips are pushed out and slightly parted. Her messy strawberry-blonde twin tails are tied high at the crown and come apart in loose unruly strands, one tail flopping forward over her right shoulder, the other swept back and slightly lifted. Two small nub-like ivory horns push up out of the hair at her forehead hairline, catching the light along one edge. Loose strands swing across her freckled nose and cheek. The cropped halter top is tight across her chest and cuts off high, leaving her midriff and navel bare above the short ruffled skirt. Under the skirt hem, the tops of her thigh-high stockings are clipped to lace garters that cross the bare skin of her upper thighs, the straps pulled slightly taut as her weight shifts. Her thick tail emerges from behind her lower back, curling out to her right and forward around her hip; the heart-shaped fluffy tufted tip hovers in the air beside her thigh, and its fluff drifts with the slow sway of the tail. The emerald green heart-shaped womb tattoo bleeds soft at its edges low on her belly, its thin elegant vine-like tendrils curling around its perimeter, and the bottom of the heart and the lowest tendril tips disappear beneath the waistband of the skirt. Behind her the military bedroom is loud and lived-in: a bunk bed with olive drab blankets and a sandbag headboard, a stack of ammo crates used as a nightstand, triangular pennant banners strung across the back wall, a standing locker with its door ajar. A single warm lamp low on the left throws a hard beam across the room, and the volumetric shafts cut through the dust in the air so that the back wall falls off into soft focus. The only other light is the green glow off her eyes, which rims her lashes and paints a small emerald pool on the underside of her chin and collarbone; the front of her body sits in the lamp's falloff, so shallow shadows pool under her breasts, in her navel and beneath the skirt hem. Sharp cel-shaded planes and crisp cast shadows with high contrast separate her from the room, and saturated accents — the warm amber lamp, the acid green of the tattoo and eye glow, the strawberry-blonde hair — carry against the muted olive and khaki of the bedding. On the floor behind her and to the left, several desiccated male bodies lie where they fell, only partly in focus in the background: gray, sunken, papery skin stretched over ribs, uniforms slack on shrunken limbs, one arm flung out with the fingers curled and the nails long, another body face-down with a boot still on. Their outlines are crisp in the near-mid and soften as they recede into the far corner where the lamp light stops. She does not look at them. A small hand-drawn heart floats in a tiny speech bubble beside her cheek, drawn in thin ink with a single highlight stroke and no other lettering anywhere in the frame. Every figure in the frame is an adult. Ominous, bratty.
