His chin is lifted a fraction, the better to look down the slope of the low lens, and his smile is a closed-lipped upward curve with one corner pulled higher, eyes half-lidded and steady on the viewer, brows level. His black mullet is short over the forehead and long at the nape, the rear strands lifting and drifting sideways in a slow cold draft, the loose face-framing locks brushing his jaw; the pointed demon ears stand clear of the hair at the temples, tips catching the rim light. The cape falls from his shoulders in a heavy black column that hangs behind his calves and bellies out a hand's width to one side in the draft, folding back on itself in dark scallops. The leather of the jacket, pants and gauntlets is matte black with hard specular highlights only on the raised seams, the shoulder rolls and the tops of the boots, so the surface reads as leather by its sheen rather than its colour. Moonlight comes from high behind and to his right, cold and blue-white: it edges his left shoulder, the rim of one pointed ear, the katana's spine and the top edge of the cape, and it leaves his face and chest in shadow lit only by a faint reflected glow from the leaf-covered ground so his features stay readable. Beyond him the forest recedes in trunks: a near trunk bark-textured at foreground left, midground.trees crossing behind him, and layered further back patches of pale birch and dark pine fading into depth. The ground is a carpet of wet leaves and roots, and the pools of moonlight between the trunks are the only bright areas; everything else sinks to near-black. A single silver scabbard hangs at his left hip. Palette is black, near-black and cold blue-grey with one thin bright moonlit rim, and no other colour is admitted. Quietly dangerous, effortlessly composed.
