More to See

solo, 1girl, from behind, over-shoulder composition, sitting on bench, bench, riverside, river, sketching, drawing, holding sketchbook, pencil in hand, bear, bear illustration on the sketchbook page, oversized knit sweater, beige sweater, long sleeves, dark brown corduroy trousers, canvas sneakers, low ponytail, brown hair, hair tied back, outdoors, daytime, soft daylight, looking down, looking at sketchbook, tree, grass, water, focused From behind and slightly above her right shoulder, the camera looks down past her back at the open sketchbook in her lap. She sits three-quarters away from the lens on a weathered wooden park bench with slatted back, both feet planted on the grass, her right hip and thigh taking her weight against the seat, her left leg crossed loosely over the right ankle. Her low ponytail falls forward over her right shoulder, a few loose strands drifting across the beige knit; the oversized sweater bunches at her elbows and pools in thick folds at her waist, its ribbed hem riding up over the corduroy. Her left hand braces the sketchbook flat against her thigh, thumb pressing the spine open, while her right hand holds a pencil at the page, its tip touching the paper mid-line, and her head is tipped down, chin toward her collarbone, eyes fixed on the page rather than the river. The sketchbook page is turned toward the light and toward the lens: on it, a simple, cheerful line drawing of a bear — round ears, a heavy hunched body, thick forepaws, a small curl of a mouth — the bear's outline darkest where the pencil has gone over a line a second time, the rest pale graphite on cream paper. The blank lower corner of the page is still empty, waiting. The river fills the upper third of the frame beyond the bench, a broad grey-green band moving left to right, its bank lined with grass and a few leaning trees; the far shore is soft and low, out of focus. Daylight arrives as a wide, diffuse overcast light from above and slightly behind her left, so the bench casts a short soft shadow beneath it, the sketchbook page sits at the brightest point of the image without glare, and the shadow side of her ponytail and the underside of the bench are the only deep darks. Palette: beige, warm brown corduroy, grey-green water, pale grass green, and cream paper, with graphite grey the only near-black. Behind the bench the grass is pressed flat in a patch where someone has stood, and the pencil leaves a faint grainy track across the paper's tooth as it moves. A quiet, absorbed afternoon.
