More to See

sleeping, eyes closed, lying on bed, on back, frilled nightgown, cream-colored nightgown, lace frills, frilled cuffs, lace collar, hugging, squeezing, full nelson, arms wrapped around, legs wrapped around, hugging multiple plushies, oversized plushies, multiple plushies, halloween plushies, jack-o'-lantern plushie, black cat plushie, bat plushie, ghost plushie, pumpkin plushie, monstrous plushies, fangs, claws, bulging veins, anger vein, popping veins, troubled expression, awkward expression, worried eyes, sweatdrop, strained expression, trying to escape, struggling, squirming, from above, bed sheet, pillow, comforter, white bedding, soft blanket, night bedroom, dim warm lamplight, warm interior, cozy, comedic tension The camera looks down from directly above the bed, so the whole composition reads as a soft rectangle of white bedding with a body sprawled across it. A young woman lies flat on her back in the middle of the mattress, fast asleep: eyes gently closed, lashes resting on her cheeks, lips slightly parted around a slow breath, a faint relaxed smile. Her dark hair fans out across the pillow in loose strands, and her head is tilted a little toward her right shoulder. She wears a cream-colored cotton nightgown with intricate lace frills running along the collar and another row of frills at each cuff; the fabric bunches and creases where her body presses it into the mattress, one frilled cuff crumpled against her wrist. Her left arm hooks snugly around two plushies, her right arm clamps a third against her ribs, and both bare feet and lower legs scissor around a fourth, heel locked over its back, so that every limb is committed to a grip and none is free. The plushies are enormous — each one nearly the length of her torso and far too bulky for the hug — and they are monsters: a grinning jack-o'-lantern with stitched seams and crooked teeth, a black cat with needle fangs and raised hackles, a bat with clawed felt wings half-extended, and a shaggy ghost with a gaping crooked mouth. All of them strain away from her body at once, twisting their plush bodies toward the edges of the bed, and each wears a wide-eyed, worried, deeply awkward expression, mouth pulled into a wobbly line, felt brows tilted, a single sweatdrop beaded at one temple. Embossed veins bulge across their foreheads and temples, raised blue ridges of stitched fabric standing up off the nap of the plush, each one pressed outward at the point where her arm or leg squeezes — the jack-o'-lantern's vein popping where her forearm crosses its chest, the bat's standing out along its wing joint, the cat's raised at the neck where her ankle pins it. The mattress dips visibly under each of their weights, the comforter rumples in radiating creases away from the plushies' bulks, and the pillows are punched into hollows behind her shoulders. The only light comes from a small bedside lamp off the upper-left edge of the frame, warm and low: it lights the tops of the plushies' heads and the bridge of her nose, gathers gold in the lace frills and leaves deep dumpy shadow beneath every plushie and under her chin. The palette stays warm and confined — cream bedding, cream cotton, orange of the pumpkin, black of the cat and bat, a small violet of the ghost, and the single cold blue thread of the veins — with the rest of the room falling away into dark warm brown beyond the pool of the lamp. Comedic tension.
