shunga, ukiyo-e print, erotic ukiyo-e style illustration, 1boy, 1girl, couple, heian-style robes, loose kimono, robe slipped off shoulders, bare shoulders, bare back, reclining, lying on side, facing each other, foreheads almost touching, hand on another's cheek, hand on waist, legs intertwined, loose black hair, long hair, hair spread on floor, half-closed eyes, looking at another, flushed cheeks, parted lips, intimate, from above, dutch angle, overhead view, futon, rumpled bedding, folded silk quilt, screen partition, incense burner, thin curl of smoke, flat color planes, fine black keyblock outline, visible paper grain, limited palette, indigo, vermilion, ochre, off-white paper, sumi black, positive absence: no visible genitalia, bodies veiled by folds of silk, positive absence: no jewelry, no hair ornaments, hair completely unadorned, positive absence: no text, no signature, no seals, no lettering anywhere on the print Seen from directly above and canted a few degrees off square, the print opens on two lovers lying on a low futon in a shallow interior, their bodies turned toward each other in a loose S that fills the sheet from corner to corner. The woman lies on her right side, hip and shoulder taking her weight, her left arm folded up under her cheek; her black hair has come loose from its knot and fans across the pillow and the floorboards in long separate strands, each strand drawn as a clean flat ribbon of ink with no gloss. The man faces her from her left, propped on his right elbow, his left hand resting flat at her waist over the silk, his right hand cupped along her jaw with the fingertips just at her ear; their foreheads nearly meet, and between them a narrow wedge of paper-white pillow is the brightest thing in the frame. Her robe has slid from both shoulders and pooled in a deep fold at the small of her back, baring the long curve of her spine and the flat plane of her back; his robe hangs open down the chest, its collar a single black line crossing his ribs. One of her knees rides over his thigh, her foot hooked behind his calf, the silk of the quilt crushed into sharp ridges where their weight presses it. Their eyes are half-lowered and neither looks at the other's face directly — her gaze rests on his mouth, his on the hollow of her throat, and both are caught in the same held breath, lips parted, color rising in a flat vermilion blush across cheekbones and the tips of their ears. Light comes from a single paper lantern at the top-left edge of the frame, warm ochre, flattening the bedding into planes and throwing the couple's shadow to the lower right, where it overlaps the folded quilt in a hard-edged silhouette; the rest of the room falls to a cool indigo dark, with a screen partition standing behind them carrying one suggested pine bough in dilute ink. An incense burner at the frame's edge releases a thin curl of smoke that bends away from the lantern — the only soft line in an image otherwise built from flat color and black keyblock contour. The palette admits nothing beyond indigo, vermilion, ochre and the raw off-white of the paper, with all flesh rendered in a single unmodulated pale tone and the shadows as pure flat indigo; the paper's tooth and the slight misalignment of the vermilion plate against the keyblock are visible at the edges of the sheet. Quiet, suspended heat.
