The man is seated on a low, pale stone block, heavy thighs spread, weight dropped onto his right hip; the stone's flat top meets him only under that hip and thigh, one sandaled foot planted flat on the paper plane while the other toes the ground a little ahead. His sizable belly rolls forward over the waist of the noble skirt, pressing the toga's hem outward; the sleeveless toga is a simple undyed cloth slung over his left shoulder and gathered at the waist, its edge hanging loose across his chest and leaving both heavy arms and sloping shoulders bare. The medieval belt cinches the skirt at his widest point, its leather pulled taut and slightly creased, and at the exact center sits the round dragon medallion — a coiled draconic relief whose raised ridges catch the light. One hand rests on the crown of his knee, fingers spread; the other he lifts and turns slowly in front of his face, studying the back of it. His dragon-like skin reads across every exposed surface: overlapping scales along the forearms and shins, thicker plated ridges climbing the sides of his neck and brow, a coarser scaled patch at the cheekbones breaking into the human texture of his aged, deformed face — nose slightly skewed, one side drooping lower, brow ridge heavy, deep creases at the eyes and mouth. His slightly long black hair, threaded through with gray, is swept back and falls in uneven strands behind his ears and down the nape, and his full beard spills gray and black across his collar. The nobleman's crown is tilted a touch on his head, its gold posts catching and scattering the light. His gaze sits on his own raised hand, not the viewer, lids low and mouth slightly open under the beard — an appraisal, not a smile. A single warm light burns low from the front-left, like a candle off-frame: it gilds the left side of the crown, the left cheek and the lifted hand, and lets the right side of his face, his neck and the far hip fall into deep shadow; a soft shadow pools beneath him on the paper. The palette is muted and gothic — ink-black pencil hatching over crimson, ocher, olive and tarnished gold watercolor washes, with the warm candle glow the only brightness, everything else cool and dim. The scales at his neck cast their own tiny shadows on the skin beneath each one. Quiet grandeur, melancholy dignity.
