The fluffy mat, printed all over with pale teddy bears and ducklings, fills the foreground edges of the frame and dimples under every padded knee and hip; a film of soft lint sits in its pile where the sunlight rakes across it. Cure Happy is nearest the lens on the left, mid-crawl with both mittened hands planted close to the viewer's face and her knees drawn up, pink twintails slipping forward off her shoulders; Cure Sunny has already collapsed on the right, cheek and chin pressing down on the viewer's chest, her single orange bun squashed flat against the fabric and her bare lashes wet. Cure Peace drapes across the middle, one mittened paw curling into the collar of Cure March's onesie, and Cure March is rolling in from the far side with her very long green hair fanned out over the mat, half of it webbing across the viewer's shoulder. Cure Beauty lies highest and farthest, chin hooked over Cure Peace's bonnet, her blue hair-tubes resting against the other girl's lace, one arm flung wide so her mittened hand rests palm-down on the mat. Every onesie is a different bright color — pink, orange, yellow, green, blue — with a ruffled PreCure-style collar, a small chest emblem and a decorated hem, and under each, the enormous bulk of the layered white diaper with its glossy plastic cover shows as a rounded, crinkling mass that holds the fabric of the onesie away from the body; three tiers of lace and a row of snaps run along the waist. Each girl wears a bonnet whose wide frilled lace brim frames her face, a huge lace bib tied high at the neck, safety mittens swallowing both hands, and booties with fat satin bow ribbons on the instep, and each has a huge pacifier strapped across her mouth, the shield denting her cheeks and the bulb shifting as she sucks. Their faces are all the same doubled expression: a hot flush across nose and cheeks, eyes squeezed up and brimming, tears running sideways down their temples in the low gravity of lying heads, mouths working around the pacifier while trying to smile a welcome. Light comes in from the tall window on the left, where the curtains are pulled wide, so the sunshine lands as warm bars across the mat and across the girls' cheeks and bonnets from the left, leaving the undersides of the piled bodies and the far corner behind the huge crib in soft pink shadow; motes turn slowly in the beam. Behind and above them the huge pink nursery unfolds — the crib with its spindle rails and frilled bumper, the changing table stacked with folded cloths, the low table under a scalloped tablecloth with a chair pushed askew, and shelves of colorful baby toys — all of it scaled so large against the small figures that it reads as a room built for a giant. A small specific detail: each time a girl shifts her padded weight, the nap of the fluffy mat stays flattened in a girl-shaped hollow after she moves. Tender, overwhelming.
