Each girl is a single continuous cocoon of opaque wrapping paper wound in overlapping diagonal layers from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet, so no skin shows anywhere: only her eyes, brows, a blush-flushed upper face and the big bow gag over her mouth break the paper. Cure Happy lies leftmost on her back, pink-and-white polka-dot paper spiraled around her in a pink ribbon tied in a bow at her waist, her long pink twintails released from their ties so the two tails sweep out across the mat beyond her head, her pink-eyed gaze turned up at the lens. Beside her Cure Sunny, orange-and-gold striped paper, orange ribbon cinching her bound arms tight against her sides, her single hair bun the only hair left free above the wrapping at her crown. In the middle Cure Peace, lemon-yellow paper scattered with small checkered squares and a yellow ribbon cross-wrapped over her ponytail bulge at the back of her skull. Cure March next, spring-green paper with a fine green-and-silver check, green ribbon wound at knees and ankles, her long tri-tail ponytails slipping free from the top fold of paper and curling along the mat. Cure Beauty rightmost, blue-and-silver paper in a tight diagonal weave, silver ribbon and a second pale-blue ribbon crossing her chest, a thin silvered band of paper wrapped at each temple where her hair tubes would be. Each girl wears one enormous frilled layered diaper over the paper at the hips, thick white padding layered in ruffled tiers with a scalloped elastic waistband, so bulky it domes above the flat of her stomach and compresses into the mat; every girl's is tied shut over the wrapping, not under it. Their gags are large bowed knots of ribbon in their own colors, pressed flat over their mouths, the loops sitting high on their cheeks. All five struggle at once: Cure Happy's spine arches off the mat and her bound knees rock sideways, her cheek smeared with tears; Cure Sunny twists her shoulders to work one arm free, teeth gritted behind the gag bow; Cure Peace has rolled half onto her side, one bound knee levered up, tears pooling along her lower lashline; Cure March strains her head upward and her wet lashes glint; Cure Beauty lies more still with her eyes narrowed and a single tear cutting a bright line over her blush. Every pair of eyes finds the lens, shy, wet and pleading, mouths straining into cracked smiles beneath the bow gags. Around them the room is dense with party finery: a white-slatted crib pushed against the pink wall behind them with a garland of paper fans and fresh balloons tied to its rail, a shelf of stacked diaper bags in pastel prints, a small table holding a pink birthday cake with five lit candles, a plush teddy propped against the crib leg with a paper party hat perched crooked on its head, streamers looping overhead. The warm ceiling lamp sits just behind the camera, dropping soft even light down the fronts of the wrapped bodies while their shadows pool tight underneath them; the candle flames add small warm pinpoints from the right. The palette holds to pink, ivory, pastel candy tones and each girl's own signature color in her paper and ribbon, nothing else admitted; the ceiling lamp's warmth catches the crinkled folds of the wrapping and lifts a soft sheen from the elastic frills of the diapers. Quiet, festive, tenderly embarrassed.
