More to See

1boy, solo, adult male, slim athletic build, toned lean muscle, pumpkin mask, jack-o'-lantern head, carved pumpkin face, orange body paint, pumpkin texture body paint, painted skin, orange thong, minimal clothing, mostly bare, holding pitchfork, gripping pitchfork shaft, pitchfork in right hand, walking towards viewer, mid-stride, one foot forward, night, dark street, dim street lamps, streetlights, warm orange lamp glow, long cast shadow, frontal view, full body, three-quarter angle, from slightly below, foreshortening, cracked asphalt, closed storefronts, cold blue-black night air A single man walks straight at the viewer down an empty street at night, seen full body from a slightly low three-quarter angle so he reads tall and advancing; his torso is turned a few degrees off the lens, right shoulder forward, right foot planted flat mid-stride with the left heel just lifting behind him, weight carried on the front leg. The mask is a real carved pumpkin worn over the whole head: oval orange rind, dry ridged surface, a jagged triangular eye hole on each side and a toothy sawtooth grin cut through below, a short dry stem on top; through the eye holes only darkness shows, no face visible. Beneath the mask every inch of skin carries the paint — orange pigment from collarbone to shin, worked in faint vertical ribs of deeper orange and burnt sienna that follow the muscle of chest, ribs and thigh, hard paint edge stopping at the jaw line under the rind so the head is rind and the body is painted gourd. He wears only a snug orange thong at the hips, its fabric a slightly different finer orange than the painted skin, taut across the hip bone. His right hand grips the wooden shaft of a pitchfork about a third of the way up; the shaft hangs diagonally down across his body to the lower left, three steel tines aimed forward-down ahead of his leading foot, catching a thin wet highlight. Left arm swings free at his side, fingers loose. His whole front is lit from the streetlamp ahead-left: the light strikes the left side of the mask and left pec, glazes the pitchfork tines, and drops warm orange rims along his right arm and thigh, while the right side of his face-equivalent and the underside of the jaw fall into deep shadow; a long hard cast shadow rakes behind him to the right, tangled on the cracked asphalt, and a second dimmer lamp far behind him makes a small halo in the haze. The street is closed storefronts and a dark ribbon of kerb receding into blue-black air, background almost swallowed by the dark; the far lamps' reflections streak only on the damper patches of the road. Palette strictly the oranges of the gourd and lamp against cold blue-black night, with graphite grey for the steel and asphalt. The painted skin stays matte and slightly powdery next to the wet sheen of steel and the soft rind of the mask — the one physical tell being the mask's carved eye holes reading as total black against the lamplit orange around them. Quiet menacing, Halloween-slow.
