Her long red hair is gathered into one thick single braid that runs down her back, past her shoulder blades, tapering near her waist, and the loose strands at her temple are pushed back off her face. She wears a red two-piece bikini whose top and bottom are the same saturated red; her arms are wrapped tightly around his torso, both forearms crossing behind his back, her palms flat against his shoulder blades, the fingers of her right hand slightly spread and pressing into the skin. She leans her weight onto her front foot, her hip cocked as she pushes in; her cheek is pressed flat against his cheek, so the side view shows her mouth wide in an open-mouthed grin with her eyes half-squeezed and sparkling, and a hot blush spreading across the visible cheek and the bridge of her nose. The boy has spiky black hair sticking up in uneven clumps and warm brown eyes; he is shirtless, wearing only blue swim trunks, and his arms wrap back around her waist, his hands cupping her lower back with his fingers hooked slightly over her hip. He is caught mid-laugh, his head tipped back an inch and his mouth open with the grin, his own blush faint on the side of his face the light strikes. Both of them look at each other — her eyes on his, his eyes on hers — and the way their faces touch means the contact is the center of the frame. Their feet are bare and interlocked in the sand, one of her feet between his, pressed down so the sand hollows around the toes. Brilliant midday sunlight comes from above and slightly behind the camera, striking the tops of their shoulders and the crown of his hair, and casting short, soft shadows directly beneath their feet, each shadow hugging the ground at the base of the ankle without stretching far. The pale powdery sand fills the bottom third of the frame, fine and dry, with a few footprints and a soft white lip where the tide has been; behind them the turquoise ocean tide laps gently against the shore, a thin white foam line following the curve of the beach, the water's surface breaking into small glittering highlights. The reds of her hair and bikini glow intensely under the hard sun, saturated against the turquoise and pale sand; his blue trunks sit cool against the warm palette. The colour discipline is red against turquoise against pale sand, nothing else admitted. A small revealer of physics: where their cheeks press together there is a faint sheen and the skin compresses, and the wet sand darkens around their toes. Sun-drenched, tender, effortlessly joyful.
