The camera sits low in a ruined service corridor of a spaceship and looks up a narrow vertical shaft of space: a young woman fills the lower half of the frame in full body, seen from her boots to the crown of her head, her back pressed flat against the corrugated metal wall on the left, and above and before her the massive pale segmented larva rears out of the dark and bends over her, its bulk swallowing the upper right of the composition so that she reads as small as a hand against it. Her weight is thrown backward onto her heels, spine arched away from the creature, shoulders jammed into the ribbed wall so the corrugation prints its ridges against the fabric of her tank top; her right boot is planted flat, her left knee bent and sliding sideways as if about to give. Her left arm is raised before her face at chest height, palm out, fingers splayed and trembling, elbow bent, forearm crossing the line of sight between her eyes and the creature's descending head; her right hand is flat against the wall beside her hip, fingertips white where they brace. Her chin is tipped up and back, throat stretched, mouth open on a breath she cannot finish, nostrils flared, brow pulled high and together, and both eyes are wide open, whites showing, pupils dropped to the bottom of the iris, locked upward on the larva's mouthparts. Her long wavy blonde hair is unbound: the mass of it has slid back over her right shoulder against the wall and a few damp strands are plastered to her cheek and throat, the rest lifted slightly by the air moving in the corridor.
The larva comes out of the shadowed ceiling above her: a huge pale maggot body of wet overlapping segments, each ring catching a rim of light along its upper edge so the low points between them fall deep grey, its skin glossy and beaded with moisture and streaked with running fluid. It rears, the front third of the body arcing up and forward, and its blunt head hangs over the girl with the faintly ringed mouth of a grub already half open, wet inner folds visible, a thin rope of mucus bridging from lip to lip. Its mass is pressed between the corridor ceiling and the right wall, and its lower segments disappear into darkness so there is no end to it; a single wet sheen trails long and unbroken down the side of one segment toward her. Dripping condensation is everywhere: fat beads hang from the ceiling grates and the pipe runs and slide down the corrugated ribs, and a slow trickle runs along the floor seams, breaking into a shallow reflective puddle at the lip of her boot.
The light is split and unmixable: harsh red emergency lamps pulse through the smoke from a housing high behind the creature, throwing red along the top of its segments and along the wall above her head, while a cold blue backup light low in the left foreground rakes up across her knees, her bare midriff, her raised palm and the underside of her jaw, leaving the deeper parts of the corridor and everything behind the larva in absolute black. Volumetric haze sits thick between the two sources, so each beam has a body and a hard edge, and the droplets catch points of both colours. Chiaroscuro dominates: brightๅคฑไธ rim on pale skin and wet keratin, crushing shadow in the middle of the corridor.
Palette locked to wet pale flesh, cold steel blue, and red emergency light against near-black shadow, nothing else admitted. The painted movie poster finish drives it: hard airbrushed edges and visible brushwork in the alien hide, heavy grain over the whole frame, a slight registration softness, inks that sit deep and saturated. The glint of the small silver navel piercing and the thin silver bracelets and studs are the one cool white highlight on her body, catching the blue exactly as the film grain breaks over them. Dread held taut and claustrophobic.
