The set is a Heian courtyard at night: a dark wooden veranda rail and a single round paper lantern hang low at the right foreground, the lantern being the only light source — it throws a warm amber pool from the right that lights the right half of his face, the lantern-facing side of the tate eboshi, and the front of the black sleeve, while the left side of his face and the back of his hair fall into deep blue darkness, the single red eye glowing faintly out of that shadow. Cold moonlight from above and behind rims his white hair and the shoulders of the robe in a thin silver edge and throws his cast shadow, long and soft, down onto the railing behind him. The palette admits red, black and blue against the lantern's amber and the night's cold blue-grey, with small gold glints on the beads and the talisman. Dust drifts visible in the lantern beam, and the talisman's folded paper has gone soft and translucent where the warm light passes through it. Quiet, watchful, a little dangerous.
