1girl, solo, japanese girl, miko, white haori, red hakama, long black hair, black hair, straight hair, hair past waist, pale skin, eerie smile, wide unsettling grin, multiple limbs, extra arms, body modification, exposed ribcage, bare ribs through skin, ribcage visible, unsettling, horror, from below, dutch angle, looking down at viewer, head tilt, reaching toward viewer, outstretched arm, many hands, dark shrine, night, low-key lighting The camera sits low and tilted a few degrees off level, so the girl towers above the lens inside a narrow wooden shrine corridor at night; she is the only figure in the frame. Her head tips down toward the viewer while her chin stays level, and her wide grin pulls high and uneven at one corner, lips parted just enough to show a thin dark gap between the teeth. Both of her own eyes are fixed straight down at the lens, lids not narrowed, unblinking, so the smile and the stare disagree with each other. Her long black hair hangs in a heavy sheet from a nape she has not pinned back, the strands falling straight past her waist and catching only the lowest and weakest of the light, so the mass of it sinks into the corridor's dark behind her. A red-and-white ribboned cord gathers it once at the crown, unornamented otherwise. She wears the miko dress intact — the white haori with its wide stiff sleeves, the bright red hakama with its deep pressed pleats — and the costume stays clean and correctly folded, which is what makes the rest of her worse. Extra limbs emerge from behind her shoulders and from the sides of her waist, sleeved in the same white fabric at the shoulder and bare below the elbow; three of the surplus hands splay open near the camera at different depths, palms toward the lens, one hand curling its fingers shut while another holds still, and two more arms hang back half-lost in shadow at her sides so their exact number reads as unresolved. Her own two arms are the ones lifting her hem, and the fabric strain at the shoulder seams shows where the extra weight sits. Her chest is opened by no wound — the skin simply thins to a translucent tautness over the sternum, so the ribcage stands out as a clear pale cage of bone beneath it, each rib catching a hard pinpoint of highlight, the intercostal hollows darker, and the outline of a heartbeat moving under the lowest rib. The white haori hangs open at the front to bare this exactly, the fabric edges curling away from the sternum without tearing. Contact: the balls of her bare feet press flat on the worn plank floor, her weight on the forward foot, the back heel lifted slightly; the extra hands touch nothing. The floorboards darken and glisten in a damp line running from the corridor's far end, and her long shadow is thrown away from the camera, toward the corridor's interior, so she is backlit. Light: one small hanging lantern far behind her down the corridor is the only source, low and warm, rimming her hair, shoulders and the tips of the splayed hands while the front of her face and body fall into cool darkness; the shine on the ribs and the wet gleam on her teeth are the only bright things facing the lens. Palette: black, cold white, deep lacquer red on the hakama, and one warm lantern amber; nothing else admitted. The dark wooden corridor, its pillars and the ribbed floorboards close in on her on both sides, leaving only a narrow standing space. Quiet dread.
