character: himura_kenshin, copyright: rurouni_kenshin 1boy, solo, himura kenshin, long hair, ponytail, orange hair, red hair, purple eyes, blue eyes, cross-shaped scar on left cheek, red kimono, white haori trim, blue hakama, sitting, cross-legged, gripping katana, both hands on scabbard, staring at sky, looking up, head tilted back, night, riverside, riverbank, campfire, bonfire, flames, sparks, embers rising, night sky, stars, milky way, full moon, from below, low angle, wide shot, silhouette rim light, warm firelight, cool blue night, quiet, alone, no other people, empty background, mountains, reeds, stones, campfire as only warm light source The camera sits almost at ground level a few paces downstream, tilted up so that everything rises: the fire in the near foreground, the seated figure above it, the far bank low and dark, and the whole upper half of the frame given to the night sky. A lone figure sits cross-legged on a flat gravel shelf at the river's edge, spine straight, hips settled back on his heels' weight with more of the load on his left hip, one knee slightly higher than the other. Both hands are wrapped around the sheathed katana laid across his lap: right hand high on the scabbard just under the guard, left hand lower near the tip, knuckles pale with the grip, thumbs locked over the cord wrap. The scabbard rests on his folded shins, its tip dipping toward the gravel on his right. His head is tipped fully back, chin lifted, throat exposed to the sky, long red hair spilling down his back and the ponytail hanging loose behind his shoulders, a few strands lifting in the river draft; his eyes are fixed straight up on the stars, not on the fire, not on the camera, lids narrowed in steady concentration, mouth set in a flat quiet line. The fire sits at his right hip, small and contained inside a ring of wet stones, and because the flame is below his face the low angle catches the underside of his jaw, the front of his throat, the inner edges of his sleeves and the top plane of his knees in hot orange while the rest of him stays in cool shadow; the light falls off fast, so the far side of his body, the back of his haori and the ground behind him sink into blue-black. Sparks peel off the fire, drift up past his shoulder and die out before they reach the height of his head. Behind him the river runs as a broad dark band with the moon's broken reflection laid down its middle in soft silver streaks, and beyond it a low ridge of mountains holds a black, nearly featureless silhouette; a stand of reeds at the left edge bends in one direction, showing which way the night air moves. Nothing else is in the frame -- no boats, no lanterns, no second figure anywhere on either bank. The palette is held to three notes: the orange-gold of the fire on skin and steel, the cold indigo of river and sky, and the red of his hair and kimono picking up the flame as the only warm colour in the dark. The gravel under him is scattered with a few flat pale stones that catch the firelight on their upward faces only, and the grass tufts between them stay black. Quiet, solitary resolve.
