On the left, a woman of the Northern Parliament: tall and broad-shouldered, pale skin, long white hair whipped sideways by the wind, sharp ice-blue eyes, a heavy white double-breasted greatcoat with blue trim, gold epaulettes and rows of medals, a white peaked cap with a naval badge, a long cape billowing out to the left, white thighhighs and dark boots, her right fist clenched and raised across her chest, chin lifted, gaze turned up toward a red banner overhead, mouth set in a firm line. On the right, a woman of the Dragon Empery: a head shorter, black hair pulled into twin loops with red ribbons, warm amber eyes, a fitted crimson and dark-blue naval tunic with gold buttons and red braid at the cuffs, a small red star pinned at her collar, red skirts and dark boots, her left arm thrust out and up toward the sky with an open palm, red cape snapping behind her, eyes narrowed and looking up along the same line, lips parted on a breath. Their shoulders and upper arms press together along the spine line, the taller one's elbow crossing behind the shorter one's back, boots planted on the wet cobbles with a small ring of swept snow and a wet dark print where each heel has shifted. Above them a vast red banner stretches diagonally across the top of the frame, its fabric rippling and curving with the folds; on it a pale hammer-and-sickle and a red star rendered large and flat, and further back near the ships' masts smaller red flags stream sideways, all lettering on hulls and crates reduced to illegible stencilled texture. The single light source is a cold, low break in the overcast behind the ships, throwing a hard rim along both women's left contours and casting long shadows forward across the quay toward the camera; everything beyond the lit quay and the banner's underside falls into deep grey-blue shadow. Palette locked to red, white and steel blue-grey, with gold confined to the epaulettes, buttons and the banner's emblem. One physical note: the wind fills the capes and the banner in the same direction, and each woman's loose hair streams the same way, while the snow only settles on the upward-facing folds of the banner and the tops of the ships' turrets. Cold, defiant, monumental.
