She leans far forward over her knees, weight loaded on her left knee and hip with her right foot planted for balance, both arms stretched out and palms open, fingers spread, so the coins sift between them rather than being held. Her long straight raven-black hair falls forward off her shoulders in a heavy curtain past her waist, sliding over the red kimono and swinging toward the floor; the wide gold obi cinches her waist and its knot presses against her back, hidden from this view. The deep red kimono with its gold-threaded crane pattern bunches at her elbows and opens at the sleeves as her arms extend, the cranes catching the light as the fabric shifts, and her small gold stud earrings glint at her earlobes. Her face tips up toward the lens, chin raised, with one brow lifted, dark eyes wide and fixed on the falling coins directly in front of her, mouth open in a delighted grin, a faint flush across her cheeks, the near sleeve of the kimono blurred with the motion of the throw. The coins are struck on their upper faces, each rim catching a hot highlight and each lower face falling dark, some spinning flat, some edge-on, some already dropping toward the floor and ringing off the wood where a scatter of earlier coins lies. The only light is a warm low source from the lower right out of frame, raking across her face, painting gold on the crane pattern and the obi and throwing a long hard shadow of her bent body and her outstretched arms down the polished floorboards to the left; beyond the pool of light the dark room is absolute, so the coin glitter reads as the brightest thing in the frame. Palette is deep red, black and gold against near-black wood, nothing else admitted. Detailed budget sits on her hands, the coins and the face; the floor and darkness stay simple. Opulent, mischievous.
