More to See

1boy, solo, young man, blonde hair, slicked back hair, smooth straight hair, tsurime, upturned eyes, red pupils, sharp eyes, charcoal grey cotton yukata, white sash, kneeling, seiza, leaning forward, holding katana, cleaning sword, white cloth, polishing blade, looking at object, focused expression, closed mouth, from above, three-quarter view, close-up on hands and blade, indoor, wooden floor, shoji screen, afternoon light, tatami, sword maintenance kit, uchiko powder ball, oil cloth, quiet mood Camera looks down from above and slightly behind his right shoulder, a three-quarter view of one young man kneeling in seiza on a pale tatami floor, the crown of his head and the long line of his nose the nearest things to the lens. His hair is blonde, slicked straight back from the forehead in a smooth unbroken sheet, every strand combed flat and glossy so the lamplight slides along it in one continuous highlight; a few short strands at the nape sit flat against his neck. His face is angled down toward his work, chin dipped, and the sharp upturned tilt of his eyes reads clearly even from this angle -- outer corners lifting, upper lids drawn in a firm line, and inside them the pupils are a clean saturated red, narrowed in concentration. A faint crease sits between his brows; his mouth is closed and relaxed. He is caught mid-motion, leaning forward over his knees. His left hand grips the katana just below the tsuba, holding the blade horizontally across his lap and tilted so the flat catches the light, the bare steel running from his fist out past his knee toward the lower edge of frame. His right hand wraps a soft white cloth around the blade and draws it slowly along the steel from base toward the tip, thumb and forefinger pinching the cloth so it bunches and drags; a thin film of oil follows the cloth and darkens the metal behind it. His elbows rest close to his ribs, shoulders rounded forward, weight settled back on his heels with the tops of his feet flat on the tatami. The katana's scabbard lies beside his right knee, and a small lacquered box of maintenance tools sits open at his left, an uchiko powder ball and a folded oil cloth inside it. His gaze is fixed on the blade where the cloth meets the steel, not on the camera. His yukata is charcoal grey cotton, the collar crossed left over right and pulled snug, the fabric creasing in soft folds at his shoulders and bunching where it wraps his thighs; a plain white sash is tied at his waist, its knot pushed around toward his back and its ends lying flat. The sleeve on his right arm is held back by a thin white cord tied around the upper arm so the fabric does not fall onto the oiled steel. The room is a quiet interior: pale tatami mats with visible weave running in parallel lines, a shoji screen behind him with translucent paper glowing warm, and beyond it the darkness of the room's far corner. Low afternoon light comes in from the left through the shoji, raking across the tatami and striking the left side of his face, the slicked blonde hair and the flat of the blade; the right side of his face and the folds of his yukata fall into soft shade, and his shadow and the sword's thin shadow lie together across the mats to his right. The palette is restrained -- charcoal, warm white, pale straw tatami, the blonde of his hair, and the single hot red of his pupils and the thin oil sheen on the steel. The blade's reflection is darker and softer than the light it mirrors, a dull grey streak rather than a second window. Quiet, absorbed.
