Story Chapter 29: Behind Closed Doors

The hotel corridor was quiet compared with the nightclub they had just left. Daniel walked beside Mirage, one hand resting at her waist as he guided her toward the room he had booked. She maintained her pleasant smile, though her attention remained fixed on him. Every detail mattered now: his movements, his expressions, and whether he was carrying the access passkey she needed. When they entered, Daniel closed the door behind them. The room was warmly lit, with a large bed against the far wall and heavy curtains drawn across the windows. Mirage took a few steps inside, expecting him to continue their conversation. Instead, Daniel suddenly moved behind her and caught both her wrists, pulling her arms firmly behind her back. She stiffened as he secured his grip, preventing her from turning around. His other hand lifted her chin, forcing her face upward. Her smile vanished. “Daniel…?” she asked, her voice carefully controlled. He said nothing immediately. Mirage's thoughts raced. Had he recognized her? Had someone at the facility warned him about an infiltrator? Or was this simply an unexpected move from a man she had underestimated? She tested his hold discreetly, but his grip remained firm. “That's an unusual way to welcome someone to a hotel room,” she remarked, trying to sound composed despite the sudden tension. Daniel leaned closer, his expression difficult to read. “You have no idea who you've been spending the evening with,” he replied. A cold realization began to settle over her. The guard might have been more than an ordinary security employee, and this meeting might never have been as spontaneous as she had believed. Mirage kept her breathing steady, searching his face for some indication of what he knew. Did I walk straight into a trap? she wondered. Or is he about to reveal something else? Her eyes shifted briefly toward the closed hotel door. For the first time that evening, she wasn't certain who had been leading whom. The chapter ended with Daniel still holding her restrained, while Mirage waited for his next words.
