More to See

2girls, onee-san, imouto, indoors, living room, spacious living room, fireplace, fire, warm light, blizzard outside, snowstorm, winter, night, large window, thin flat-screen television, tv, kotatsu, two kotatsu, mikan, many mandarin oranges, orange fruit, calico cat, cat, fluffy cat, from above, high angle, sitting, seiza, leaning back, arms behind back, head tilt, looking up, eyes closed, open mouth, laughing, :d, blush, closed eyes, ^ ^, long hair, black hair, hair between eyes, sweater, turtleneck, blanket over legs, bare feet, toes, steam, breath, condensation on glass, cozy, warm colors Shot from above at a high angle looking down into the room: the frame opens over the wide floor of a spacious living room, its warm-toned interior — honey wood floor, amber-and-russet walls, terracotta cushions — laid out in a broad diagonal from the lower left to the upper right. In the lower-left midground a stone fireplace stands set into the wall, the only heat source, its fire burning hot and orange inside the grate; the light of that fire reaches across the room and paints the floor in long warm gradients, and beyond its glow the corners fall into soft brown shadow. To the right of the fireplace a low kotatsu sits with its quilt pulled up over the frame, a second kotatsu squared beside it, and both quilts are heaped with mandarin oranges — dozens of them, piled in drifts on the quilt tops and spilling onto the floor in a loose scatter, their orange rinds catching the firelight in small glossy highlights. Along the upper wall a large window runs nearly the full width of the room; outside it the blizzard rages, snow driving almost horizontally against the glass, the panes frosted at the corners and beaded with condensation on the warm inside, and the cold blue-white of the storm presses against the glass while the room behind stays amber. Below the window, low and flat against the wall, a thin flat-screen television stands silent on its slim base, its dark panel reflecting a faint orange smear of the fire. At the nearer kotatsu the little sister sits folded into it with her legs tucked under the quilt, wearing a chunky cream turtleneck sweater that bunches at her wrists and collar; she has long black hair with strands falling between her eyes, and she has thrown herself back against the cushion with both arms braced behind her, hips sunk low on the floor, chin tipped up, one shoulder higher than the other as her weight rests on the flat of one hand. Her eyes are closed in a full open-mouthed laugh, the corners of her eyes crinkled, a warm blush across her cheeks, her face tipped up toward the high camera as if she has just been caught mid-laugh; beside her knee her fingers curl around the edge of the quilt. A single mandarin orange rests half-peeled in her lap on the quilt, its peel spiralling loose. Curled deep inside the second kotatsu, only its head and one paw emerging from under the quilt, a fluffy calico cat lies with its eyes shut and its chin resting on the folded edge of the quilt, its patchwork of white, ginger and black fur lit warm on the side facing the hearth and cool on the side facing the window. The fire is the dominant light, its warmth reaching the girl's face and the quilts and the orange rinds; the blizzard outside contributes only a cold rim of blue along the window frames and the tips of the snow-piled sill. Hair of the sister falls forward over the blanket edge as her head tips back, and the quilt sags between the two table frames where the weight of the oranges pulls it. Cozy, bright, and loud with laughter.
