The head fills the upper middle of the frame tilted down at the viewer, jaw wide open in a roar, upper and lower rows of teeth bared, tongue arched back, throat a dark red pit; the head is lunged slightly forward and to one side of the vertical. Where eyes would sit, two huge curved dragon horns erupt outward and upward from the sockets' place, ridged and black, swept back over the skull, and the sockets themselves hold no eyeball -- only the horns and, around them, sealed ridges of scale. The head is aimed squarely at the camera and the whole mass of it reads as looking at viewer. Three gigantic pairs of wings open from the shoulders in staggered planes, the front pair thrown highest and widest so their leading edges verge on the top corners, the middle pair angled back and to the sides, the rear pair lower and partly lost in spray; membranes are stretched translucent between black finger bones. Scales are black and wet, each plate edged with a rim of cold light, and along the jaw, neck and forearms slick ropes of rotten blood drizzle down and drip off the lowest point of the chin into the sea as dark red threads. The open mouth is caught mid-roar, lips curled back, breath and spittle blown into the rain. The sea is in full rage around the body: waves rear into broken white crests that break against the coils, foam flying sideways, sheets of rain slanting across the whole frame in hard diagonal strokes, spray hazing the lower third so the base of the body dissolves into white water. The sky is a ceiling of black and slate storm cloud, no horizon line visible, torn into ragged bands near the top. Light comes from a single cold break behind and above the dragon, rimming the wing membranes, the horn tips, the teeth and the wet ridge of the spine in a thin silver line while the front of the body stays near-black; the only warmth in the image is the dull red of the blood and the throat. Palette is black, slate grey, cold white foam and one red accent. Everything wet: rain beads stand on scale, membranes stream water, and the dripping blood meets the sea where the crests boil. Disaster, overwhelming scale beyond any human reference, terrifying.
