More to See

two girls, 2girls, sisters, onee-shota, little sister, older sister, sleeping, waking up, futon, blanket, tugging blanket, pulling, small body, tiny female, child, short stature, oversized blanket, grasping, clenched hands, gripping fabric, arms extended, leaning back, weight on back foot, bare feet, tatami floor, japanese room, sliding shoji door, wooden floor frame, morning light, sunbeam, dust motes in sunlight, warm light, from above, high angle, looking down, close-up on hands, foreshortening, bed hair, messy hair, half-lidded eyes, drowsy, just woke up, one eye open, groggy, tousled hair, yawning, mouth open, squinting, small breasts under yukata, bare shoulders, collarbone, warm palette, cream, pale gold, soft shadows, light smile, comedic, tender, The camera looks down steeply from above and slightly behind the little sister's shoulder into the low futon on the tatami; her small back and the crown of her head dominate the lower left foreground while her sister's sprawled shape fills the upper right, half-swallowed by the wadded quilt. The older sister lies on her side across the futon, one cheek mashed into the pillow, long dark hair fanned out and tangled across the fabric and her own forearm, one bare shoulder and the loose collar of a thin yukata slipped down off the shoulder, the sleeve bunched at her elbow; her legs are drawn up under the quilt so only the pale line of a bare calf and one foot emerge at the bottom edge. The little sister braces with both bare feet planted wide apart on the tatami, knees bent, hips dropped back low, small torso swung backward at the end of the taut fabric, both fists closed deep in the bunched quilt edge and her arms pulled straight; her short pale hair sticks out around her ears, and the hem of her oversized pajama top rides up over her lower back with the effort. The blanket is stretched into a rope of gathered cloth between her fists and her sister's hip, a diagonal ridge running through the quilt where the pull is transmitted, the corner she is holding pulled clean off the older sister's shoulder and exposing the crumpled sheet beneath. Behind her the shoji screens are slid half open onto a bright morning courtyard; a broad band of low warm sunlight comes in low across the floor, striking the tops of the quilt folds and the little sister's shoulders and forearms, while the older sister's face and the bedsheets in the near foreground sit in cool soft shadow, and the sunlit dust hangs visible in the beam. The older sister's one visible eye is still mostly closed, crusted, squinting against the light, brow drawn up in groggy protest, lips parting in a half-yawn; her cheek still flattened into the pillow, she has not lifted her head, and her nearest hand has begun to curl loosely around the edge of the quilt, not yet gripping. The little sister's eyes are wide open and fixed on her sister's face, chin lifted, mouth open in an insistent shout, both arms quivering with strain. The whole room is warm cream, pale gold and oatmeal, with the dark of her sister's hair and the cool white of the sheets as the only strong values, the tatami's straw yellow carrying the light into the shadows. Tender, comedic morning.
