On the wooden floor, the boy with short black hair lies flat on his back, his head resting on the girl's lap; the back of his head presses into the fabric over her thigh, and his black-gloved hands rest loosely on his own chest. He wears a sleeveless black shirt and jeans, and both black elbow gloves cover his forearms up to the elbows. His eyes, blue, are turned up toward her face; his cheeks are flushed a deep, warm red, and his mouth is slightly open and relaxed as he breathes. The girl sits above him, seiza posture with her weight settled back onto her heels and her legs folded under her, her lap forming the pillow. She has short blonde hair that falls forward past her jaw as she looks down, and her blue eyes are soft and half-lidded, fixed on his face with an unmistakable tenderness. Her cheeks are also flushed. She wears a black sleeveless shirt and jeans, a single earring at one ear. Her right hand rests on the crown of his head, fingers spread and gently stroking through his black hair, pressing the strands down in a soft, flattened path; her left hand rests lightly at her own knee. The light is warm and low, coming from one side and above, so the highlights fall on her blonde hair and on his cheekbone and nose, while a soft shadow pools beneath his head where it meets her lap and under her folded legs. The floorboards run diagonally beneath them, and the grain of the wood catches the light in long, thin strokes. The framing is tight — a screencap-like composition, faces and hands and the point of contact between her palm and his hair as the focus. The palette is warm honey, black and denim blue, with the blush standing out as the only saturated red. Tender, quietly loving.
