3 girls, female soldiers, military uniform, mini plaid skirt, boots, putting on boots, mid-process of donning boots, locker room bench, sitting, leaning forward, from below, wide shot, dutch angle, looking down at own foot, outstretched leg, hands on boot shaft, open mouth, grin, one eye closed, blush, sweatdrop, messy ponytail, short hair, bob cut, twin braids, thighhighs, bare knees, dog tags, rolled-up sleeves, belt, combat boots, laces, half-laced boot, unlaced boot, helmet on bench, lockers, towel on shoulder, barefoot, one boot on one boot off, The camera sits low near the bench, tilted a few degrees off level, looking up along three seated women in a cramped tiled changing room; the bench runs left to right and each of them is caught at a different instant of the same task. At the left end a short-haired woman in a bob leans far forward over her right knee, that leg stretched straight out along the floor, both hands hauling the unlaced shaft of a tall black combat boot up over her calf; her bare toes are already inside, the boot's tongue still flopping out, the laces trailing over her instep and lying loose on the tile, and her ponytail of short hair has fallen forward past her cheek so she is blowing a strand out of the corner of her mouth with one eye squeezed shut. In the middle a woman with a messy high ponytail sits with both feet planted and her elbows on her knees, dragging a boot onto her left foot with her heel jammed against the bench leg for leverage, her jaw tight and her tongue at the corner of her lips, the boot's heel half swallowed, the shaft still folded down around her ankle. At the right a woman with twin braids has already got one boot laced and stamped, her other foot bare and lifted off the floor with the boot held open in both hands at her shin, and she is grinning wide and open-mouthed at the one in the middle, one eye shut in a pleased squint, chin tipped up. All three wear the same uniform: olive-drab cropped military jackets with rolled-up sleeves and a patch at the shoulder, dog tags hanging loose at the collarbone, wide belts, and short plaid mini skirts in dark green and navy checks that ride up where they lean and fold in pleats against the bench; knees bare above the boot tops. Their eyes go where the work is -- two of them down at their own feet and their hands, the right-hand woman sideways at her neighbour, and the middle one glancing back with a wry twist of the mouth at being watched. Grey metal lockers with dented doors and a few hanging towels stand along the wall behind them in the background, a helmet and a discarded sock on the bench between them, and the floor tiles carry a scatter of dropped laces and one boot lying on its side. Light comes from a single high caged bulb and a frosted window at the top left, cool white daylight pouring down from above so that it catches the tops of their thighs, shoulders and hair and leaves the undersides of the bench and the shadowed tile beneath their feet in deep green-grey; long shadows fall away from the window across the floor and the boot soles have left faint damp prints near the drain. Palette held tight to olive drab, dark green-and-navy plaid, black leather and cool grey tile, warmed only by skin and the pale yellow of the bulb. Effortlessly candid, mid-effort and bright.
