The camera sits low at the foot of the stair and tilted a few degrees off plumb, looking up at a single humanoid figure of pure shadow standing at the top of the flight. Its body is squared away from us, chest and shoulders facing the tall arched window at the head of the stairs; only the head has come around, caught mid-turn, swung just far enough over one shoulder that the smooth featureless oval of its face points down the steps at the viewer. There is no face on it at all -- no eyes, no nose, no mouth, no brow -- just a matte void with a faint cold rim where the moonlight grazes the curve of the skull. It casts nothing, and its center is not solid: from a single core at the middle of the silhouette a mass of long shadowy tendrils unwinds, some thick as an arm, some thin as cord, spilling down the treads in snaking lines and pooling on the floorboards at the bottom of the stairs, the tips fraying into the dark, writhing with a slow independent motion that does not match the stillness of the shoulders above them. Where a body should be there is only that woven knot of tendrils -- the moonlight passes the frame of the window and falls through the gaps between them, throwing broken strands of pale blue across the risers behind. The staircase is a ruin: banister posts missing, treads split and sagging, a fallen baluster lying across the third step, dust and splintered wood coating every edge. The arched window behind the figure is the only light source in the building; it is cracked in a long diagonal and the night beyond is deep indigo, and the beam it lets in lands on the top of the stairs in a bright trapezoid that dies out halfway down the flight, below which the hall is absolute black. Dust motes drift in the beam and the tendrils disturb them as they move. The palette is cold indigo and moonlit cyan on the wood and the beam, a bruised violet in the shadowed parts of the wall, with a single thin seam of deep crimson where the broken pane catches the moon; the figure itself stays near-black against all of it. Wide-to-mid framing, the staircase filling the vertical thrust of the shot, wallpaper hanging in strips at the edges of the frame. Quiet dread, absolute night terror.
