The Infected Gridiron Star

I'm completely drawn to the dark, gritty atmosphere of this piece and the tragic beauty of a sports star touched by something otherworldly. There's a captivating sadness in his gaze that makes the horror elements feel strangely poetic. If this resonates with you, please leave a like and follow for more of my artistic explorations!

1boy, solo, full-body, full body, standing, from below, low angle, foreshortening, character concept art, football player, athlete, worn-out muddy football jersey, jersey number 9, dirty shorts, long football socks, old cleats, one foot on football, soccer ball under foot, hand-rolled cigarette, holding cigarette between fingers, cigarette smoke, exhausted stare, half-closed eyes, unnatural eyes, discolored skin, translucent skin patches, parasites under skin, organic growths, parasite tendrils, neck tendrils, arm tendrils, bulging veins, visible veins, strained tendons, asymmetric shoulders, head tilted down, looking at viewer, careless posture, unsettling calm, dark background, cinematic lighting, detailed textures, grotesque biological horror, surreal character design, dark humor, eerie atmosphere, number 9, A full-body low-angle shot looks up at a single male football striker standing alone in a dark, empty locker-tunnel space, his feet planted wide so that the whole figure looms with a slight foreshortening up toward his chest and jaw. He stands in a striker's pre-kick stance: weight settled onto his left leg, right knee slightly bent, the sole of his right cleat resting flat across the top of a scuffed leather football that squashes just barely under the pressure and leaves a faint grit line on the ball; his left foot is flat on the wet concrete and the puddle there shows his reflection darker and softer than the figure above it. His torso is turned a quarter away from the camera, shoulders asymmetrical, right shoulder dropped lower than the left. He wears a faded, mud-caked football jersey, the number 9 printed large and slightly cracked across the chest in white, the fabric stiff with dried mud and clinging to his ribs. The jersey hem is frayed, dirty shorts hang loose to mid-thigh, long football socks are pulled up to the knee with grime at the calves, and old studded cleats are cracked and caked with dried turf. From beneath the collar and the sleeve seams, glossy organic growths push outward in wet, fleshy lobes, and slender parasite-like tendrils curl from the sides of his neck and from both forearms, some of them resting flat along his skin and a few reaching up toward his jaw. His face is turned down toward the viewer, the head tilted slightly; his eyes are half-lidded and stare forward with an unnatural, exhausted emptiness, the pupils slightly off, one eyebrow barely lifted. His skin is blotched and discolored in mottled patches of grey-green and bruised purple, and across his cheekbone and throat are thin, translucent windows of skin beneath which tiny dark parasites crawl and cluster. Unusual veins, thick and dark, branch from his wrists up along his forearms and from his ankles up his shins where the socks slip down. In his right hand, held loosely between the index and middle fingers and lifted near his chest, is a partially smoked hand-rolled cigarette, the tip glowing faintly orange and trailing a thin curl of smoke that rises past his jaw and catches the light. Lighting: one cold, hard source from the upper left throws a long shadow of the figure across the wet concrete toward the lower right, rimming the tendrils and growths with a pale edge and leaving the hollows of his face and the folds of the jersey in deep shadow. The football under his cleat casts its own small shadow. The palette is restricted to muddy ochre, faded jersey red, bruised grey-green, and cold blue-white in the highlights and the puddle. The set reads as a single full-body character concept sheet: the figure stands one-third right of center, with negative space at the left, and the background is an emptied out, vaguely industrial tunnel with no readable signage. Detailed textures across mud, skin, fabric and the wet organic surfaces; the mood is eerie and darkly comic, careless and unsettling.
