One day, a stranger came promising him a life full of riches and comfort. Sedna agreed to marry him and traveled to a remote island. However, she discovered that her husband was not a man, but a bird (in some versions, a bird-shaped spirit) who had deceived her. He lived in a cold and miserable place, where there was hardly any food. Upon learning of her suffering, Sedna's father went to rescue her in his kayak. As they escaped by sea, the bird-husband raised a terrible storm. Fearing that the boat would sink, the father threw Sedna into the water. Desperate, Sedna tried to hold on to the edge of the kayak. To save himself, his father cut off his fingers. According to legend, each finger that fell into the ocean transformed into different marine animals. Sedna sank to the bottom of the ocean, where she became the powerful ruler of the underwater world.
