In shinto both tanukis and kitsunes usually have a leaf on their head what help with transorming. Even thou a kitsune can use a human skull and in some stories the kitsune need to put a skull on it's head, a bone in the mouth and to bow to the full moon 100 times without dropping the skull or bone to turn into a human and they are small figurines with kitsunes (in fox form) having a skull tied to their head, dressed in a kimono and holding an umbrella with a pay. I wish i could buy one.
