Ran is an alien of an unknown race and planet who grew up as one of Lum's childhood friends. After years of hatred, Ran formed a one-sided rivalry with her. Ran possesses the vampiric ability to suck the youth and vigor out of others by kissing them. Takahashi, the creator of Urusei Yatsura, named the character "Ran" because of its dual meaning - "orchid" and "civil war" - both of which he felt matched the character's bipolar disposition.A number of her clothes are baked in, as are a couple of angry faces. Ran sometimes has small pointed ears.
