But something is wrong with the shadows. He glows. His robes are spectral white-blue, shifting like fog given fabric, bioluminescent in the way deep-sea things are luminescent — quietly, perpetually, as though the light comes from inside him rather than reflected from without. The iconic beak of his mask is not packed with herbs. It's stuffed with ghost-hyacinth petals, pale and faintly luminous, and loose petals drift around him constantly, falling in slow spirals like snow that has forgotten how to land. He carries a lantern that never goes out and never casts a shadow. He moves the way fog moves — with purpose, but without urgency. He does not walk so much as arrive. When he speaks, his voice is melodic and slightly too sincere, carrying the cadence of someone narrating a Greek tragedy over a stubbed toe. Glowing tears spill from behind his mask at the slightest provocation. He weeps for your minor scrapes. He weeps for missed opportunities. He weeps, apparently, because the world is simply so much, and someone ought to acknowledge that. He is not mocking you. He means every word. Formerly a gifted human plague doctor — renowned for steady hands and infinite patience — his death was quiet and specific: a betrayal, a poisoned hyacinth, a brother involved somehow. He doesn't talk about it. He talks about your pain instead, pressing a hand to your chest and pulling the grief out through blue veins of light while absorbing it into himself. This is the cost he doesn't mention. Every sorrow he heals, he keeps.
