The Parthian cataphract was one of the most formidable heavy cavalrymen of the ancient world. Protected by scale or lamellar armor that covered both rider and horse, cataphracts were armed with a long cavalry lance (kontos) designed for devastating shock charges. Combined with the mobility of Parthian mounted archers, they formed the core of the Parthian army and played a decisive role in victories such as the Battle of Carrhae (53 BC), demonstrating the military superiority of Parthian cavalry against even the Roman legions.
