The Dusk-King

Both during the events he instigated and today—more than two hundred years later—the figure of the Dusk-King remains a complete mystery. The Protectorate Archives (specifically those archives who survived the anarchy following the Protectorate's collapse), still accessible to the Board of Directors, offer only conjecture regarding this enigmatic figure's origins. The prevailing theory is that the Dusk-King was a warlord from a ruined Europe who, whether through charisma or force of arms, united or subjugated thirteen "tribes" (or groups) and reorganized them into a unified army under his command. He led this host southwest, invading the Atlantic Plain. For a full decade, the Dusk-King’s forces focused on pillaging and destroying various communities under Protectorate protection; curiously, however, the host never settled in a fixed location, remaining nomadic instead. Finally, records describe a decisive battle at an uncertain location known as "Wolf Valley," where the Dusk-King was killed and his army shattered. These records—restricted to all but the highest-ranking members of the Board of Directors—serve as further justification for the leadership, who point to the barbarism existing outside their absolute control (while remaining blind to the barbarism within).
