全日本ベッド工業会が制定。 日付は英語表記の「good sleep day」の「グッドスリープ」を「グッスリ」と読み、「9」と「3」の語呂に合わせたもの。これから秋の夜長を迎えることもその意味合いに。ベッドによる心地良い睡眠を広くアピールすることが目的。記念日は一般社団法人・日本記念日協会により認定・登録された。 ちなみに、「ぐっすり眠る」の「ぐっすり」は英語の「good sleep」に由来するという説もあるが、鎖国をしていた江戸時代の書物『黄表紙・即席耳学問』に「すっかり」「十分に」の意味として「ぐっすり」が使われており、英語に由来しない説もある。
