Narcissus (Daffodil): Vanity
A vain, beautiful youth named Narcissus rejected everyone who loved him — including the nymph Echo, cursed to only repeat others' words, who wasted away from heartbreak until only her voice remained. As punishment for his cruelty, the goddess Nemesis led him to a still pool, where he saw his own reflection and fell hopelessly in love with it, not realizing it was himself. Unable to look away or ever touch what he desired, he stayed at the water's edge until he wasted away — and in his place grew the narcissus flower, forever bowed toward the water, still gazing at itself.
