[TEST] Union Pacific Big Boy

I specified a Union Pacific Class 4000, but what came up was, by any measure, a Japanese-style steam locomotive. As expected of Japan, the “Kingdom of Railroads.”

The colossal black steel boiler dominates the frame, its rounded front smokebox door mounted with a centered circular plate stamped "4014" beneath a dual-lens headlight beam cutting through early dusk. Below the boiler, two articulated sets of eight massive driving wheels churn in synchronized motion, their heavy polished-steel side rods and valve gear gleaming with slick lubricating oil. Behind the enclosed cab, the enormous high-capacity tender follows, its riveted dark charcoal flank bearing bold yellow-gold lettering that reads "UNION PACIFIC", with the locomotive number "4014" crisply stenciled onto the cab's side wall. Powerful plumes of dense charcoal smoke and billowing white steam surge skyward from the twin exhaust stacks, torn backward by speed into turbulent clouds that blanket the upper ridge. Low jets of pressurized white vapor shoot laterally from the cylinder cocks, violently scattering fine ballast gravel and dust across the weathered wooden ties. Golden late-afternoon sunlight strikes the locomotive from a low angle on the left, casting brilliant amber rim light along the rivets, handrails, and cylindrical curves of the boiler while leaving the opposing mechanical undercarriage in deep, oily iron shadow. Granite canyon walls and scattered alpine pines flank the winding pass under a dusty blue sky, the immense steel beast vibrating the very earth beneath the gleaming railheads. Monumental industrial power.
