The camera sits low and slightly off-axis, looking up at her from knee height so the shrine's stone steps rise behind her and the vermilion torii pillar cuts a diagonal across the upper left of the frame; she is the only figure, centered-right, occupying two thirds of the height in a cowboy shot that crops her at mid-thigh. She stands with her weight sunk into her left leg, right knee slack and turned inward, right hip pushed out, her back and right shoulder resting against the torii's pillar so the weathered wood takes her weight: her right palm lies flat on the pillar at hip height, fingers loosely splayed, while her left arm hangs free, hand slack at her side with the knuckles brushing the pleats of her skirt. Her torso is angled a quarter turn away from the pillar, chest opened toward the lens, chin lowered and tilted a few degrees to her left so she looks out from under the 7:3 part of her bangs; the longer side of the fringe sweeps across her right brow, the shorter side exposes her left brow, and the mole under her left eye sits clear and unobstructed below the outer corner. Both eyes are open but heavy-lidded, the black irises flat and depthless, absolutely without a catchlight, so they read as two dark holes; her long lashes fringe them and catch the light as thin separate strokes. Her mouth is closed, one corner lifted a bare millimetre higher than the other, a smile so faint it is mostly in the eyelids -- amused, knowing, faintly tired, decadent. Her short bob hangs straight with the ends turning slightly toward her jaw, a few strands displaced over her right cheek by the breeze, and the white scarf lies knotted at her throat with one tail lifted a finger's width off the black collar; the thin black stockings show the faint sheen of the shin bone through the knit where the low light grazes her legs, and the black loafers are planted square on the gravel, the left one scuffed pale at the toe.
The light is a single low, warm late-afternoon source coming from frame right, behind and above her shoulder: it rims the right edge of her bob and the right side of the white scarf in a hot amber line, lays a long soft shadow of the pillar and of her own legs across the gravel to the left, and leaves the front of her face in cool open shade broken only by a faint bounce off the pale gravel below, so her skin stays a clean matte white against the black uniform. Behind her, a stone staircase and a line of stone lanterns recede out of focus into the dark of the shrine grove, damp moss on the stone, leaf litter in the step corners; the environment is desaturated -- wet grey stone, deep green-black foliage, the one saturated vermilion of the pillar and the torii beam, and the warm amber of the light, nothing else admitted. Air is still, the shadows long, the whole ground plane cooling toward evening. Quiet, languid, corrupt.
