Front view, camera at mattress height looking straight on across the foot of the bed, the two figures framed dead center and fully in shot from head to bare toes. Adult Ellen Joe sits sideways-perched on her younger sister's lap, her back leaned against the girl's chest and her shoulder tucked under the sister's chin; Ellen's weight rests on the sister's thighs and her hips settle into the girl's crossed lap, her own long legs stretched straight out along the mattress toward the viewer, bare feet side by side with the heels notched into the rumpled sheet and the toes relaxed apart. Ellen wears loose black pants with soft folds breaking at the ankle and a chunky black knit sweater whose ribbed cuff bunches at her wrists and whose collar dips to show a bare throat; her short black hair hangs with red inner streaks catching the light, and her long black tail trails out from behind her hip and lies in a lazy curve across the quilt beside the sister's knee. The younger sister sits upright behind her, propped against the headboard pillows, her legs also stretched straight out under Ellen's, her arms loosely circled around Ellen's waist with one hand resting on the black knit at her stomach; she looks nothing like Ellen, with long wavy auburn hair spread over the pillow and one strand falling across Ellen's shoulder, freckled cheeks, round green eyes and a slightly sunburnt nose, and she wears an oversized pale blue hoodie with the sleeves pushed to her elbows and wide gray cotton shorts. The sister's eyes are closed, lids heavy, her chin dropped so her cheek presses into the top of Ellen's head; Ellen's red eyes are half-lidded and turned away toward the side of the frame, one brow faintly raised, mouth a small flat line of tolerant patience, one bare foot angling up in a lazy stretch. A little cluster of floating "Z" letters drifts above the sister's hair near the upper edge of the frame, light hand-lettered strokes rising and growing fainter as they go. Warm afternoon light comes in from a window at the left of the frame and falls across the foot of the bed, striking the tops of Ellen's bare feet and the outside of her sweater sleeve while the shadow side pools under the pillows and along the right side of the mattress; the quilt shows the body-weight dips where the two of them press, and the sheet is creased in a long ridge between Ellen's stretched ankles. Behind them a plain home bedroom wall with a low shelf of books and a folded blanket at the foot of the mattress, all kept soft and out of focus. Palette of black, warm off-white bedding, pale blue and muted red. Quiet, lazily cozy.
