A tight close-up portrait seen from the side in three-quarter view, the man's head turned so that his ruined left cheek faces the lens while the right side of his skull recedes into shadow: short black hair lies flat and sweat-damp against the scalp, black eyebrows drawn hard together over two robotic eyes -- smooth metal sockets seated in the orbital bone, irises rendered as dark glass lenses that catch one hard pinpoint of light. Where the nose should be there is nothing but a collapsed opening of mutilated skin, the bridge sheared away and the raw cavity rimmed with dried and wet blood; below it the lips are entirely gone, the gums and the whole row of clenched teeth laid bare and grinding together behind torn tissue, so the jaw's set is visible as pure muscle tension at the temples. A prosthetic jaw of matte gunmetal replaces the lower half of the face on the left side, bolted into the cheekbone, its seam cutting across flesh that has healed crooked around the metal, and the teeth show through the gap where the plating meets the exposed gum. Metal parts are implanted in the head -- flat plates screwed into the shaved temple, a ribbed socket at the brow -- and from them a bundle of tubes and hoses runs down into the face: two thick corrugated hoses entering the hollow of the missing nose, thinner wires stitched into the cheek and the corner of the jaw, each entry point crusted with blood and proud swollen flesh. Scars cross the forehead and the neck; along the right jawline a split in the skin shows wet red flesh peeking through the wound, and a slow line of blood runs from the cheek entry down over the metal jaw to hang, gathered, at the lowest point of the chin before it falls. He wears a grey jet pilot suit, its high collar buckled at the throat and its shoulder seam visible at the bottom edge of the frame, the fabric scuffed and dark where blood has soaked it. The single light source is a cold overhead lamp above and slightly behind the camera's left, striking the metal implants, the wet teeth and the blood so they glare white while the far side of the head and the depth of the nasal cavity go pure black; a hard cast shadow drops from the jaw onto the collar. Palette is restricted to the grey of the suit and plating, the black of hair and shadow, and the red of blood and exposed flesh, nothing else admitted, with the whole surface finished in fine ink linework over dense crosshatching and heavy shading that thickens in the sockets and the wounds. Brutal, surgical.
