Night Witches

2

The Night Witches (nicknamed Nachthexen by Germans) were a group of all female Soviet pilots during World War II who would fly by night in planes made of plywood and canvas. They would turn their engines off before reaching their German targets, flying in silence and dropping bombs with expert precision.

The 588th Night Witches of World War II. A tight formation of Polikarpov Po‑2 biplanes flying through the darkness of night, circa 1941. Only the edges of the aircraft glint faintly under the moonlight, revealing their plywood and canvas frames. The scene is drenched in deep shadows and stark highlights, rendered in high‑contrast monochrome with block shading and selective color accents in the style of Frank Miller’s Sin City. Atmospheric haze and faint motion blur evoke speed and stealth as the planes slice through the night sky.
