San Pietro Infine

Location in San Pietro Infine, Italy The area was originally settled by the Osci and later the Samnites between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. During the 9th and 10th centuries, Saracen raiders established a stronghold at the mouth of the Garigliano River, conducting repeated, destructive incursions into inland Campania and the Lazio region. To survive, the lowland residents abandoned their open settlement around the early Christian church of Santi Petri in Flea and relocated up the slopes of Monte Sambucaro to create an incastellamento (a medieval Italian hill fortress). Following the 1861 Unification of Italy, the mountainous borderlands around San Pietro Infine became a hotbed of post-unification resistance known as post-unitary brigantaggio. Local insurgent leaders, such as Domenico Fuoco, utilized the caves and thick woodland of Monte Sambucaro as hideouts to mount raids against Italian Royal Army garrisons. In late 1943, German forces incorporated the village into the Bernhardt/Reinhard Line, a forward defensive belt of the main Gustav Line designed to block the Allied advance toward Rome. During an artillery duel between the Allies and the Axis at the Battle of San Pietro Infine from December 8 to 17, 1943, the village was completely destroyed.
