Her two curved dark horns catch the light on their upper faces only, her dark blue-black skin sheen-mottled across cheekbones and shoulders, pointed ears emerging through the hair, lips parted over her fangs and her head tilted down at the knight. Below her, the knight woman is collapsed onto the second step of the shrine stair, both knees planted on the wet stone, both shins flat, her hips sunk low so her armored thighs take her weight, and she lists sideways toward her right hip. Her dented steel plate is scored and cracked at the pauldron and the left gauntlet, one knee cop hanging loose on its strap, the breastplate caved at the ribs; her blonde hair has come loose from its tie and hangs in lank strands across her bruised, bloodied face, a cut high on her cheekbone and a dark bruise closing her right eye partway. A trickle of blood runs from her brow and pools along the seam of her jaw. Her blue eyes are fixed straight upward at the dark sole bearing down toward her, brows pinched, mouth half open in a caught breath. One gauntleted hand is splayed on the stone beside her knee, fingers spread, the other arm hanging slack with the fingertips grazing the wet step. Her red cloak is pulled half off one shoulder and pools on the stone around her knees, its white fur collar drooping forward over her breastplate. Between them a single bead of blood falls from the oni's hanging hair and strikes the knight's pauldron, splitting into a fine spray that catches the lantern light. The stair is flanked by mossy stone lanterns, a vermilion torii below and behind the camera framing the top of the shot, the shrine's dark wooden honden rising in the background with a thick shimenawa of twisted straw hung across its beam and white shide folded along it; a stone plinth with a carved oni face stands to the left of the steps, red paper lanterns strung between the lantern posts on a sagging wire, and the steps themselves are dark with damp and scattered with wet fallen leaves, each upper tread catching a wet highlight along its edge. Storm light comes from high behind the shrine roof, cold blue-grey, spilling down the steps toward the camera so the knight's face and breastplate are lit from above and her body casts a short black shadow back down the treads behind her; against it the vermilion paper lanterns burn warm and low, rimming the oni's lifted leg and the undersides of her horns in red. Palette is confined to vermilion and wet charcoal grey, the white of sarashi and fur, the raw red of the cloak and lanterns, and the bruised violet around the knight's eye. The shrine lanterns' red light glints wet along the oni's lifted claws and runs long down the wet stone treads toward the fallen knight. Ominous, suspended.
