On the right, filling the nearer plane, the camera sees Zoey in profile: her left shoulder and hip are pressed flat against a tall rough-mortared stone wall that runs the full height of the frame, the wall's face lit by low morning sun raking in from the left at a shallow angle, so the mortar joints and stone grain throw hard-edged long shadows across her bare shoulder. She wears a snug yellow tube top and cut-off jean shorts; her black hair is pulled into two tight buns on either side of her short blunt-banged head, sidelocks brushing her jaw, and her short body is angled with her chest turned slightly toward the alley while her cheekbone stays to the stone. Her eyes are wide, whites showing all around the brown iris, fixed on the alley beyond the wall's end; her mouth is clamped shut under a broad black-gloved palm. A faceless man in black stands directly behind her, his head a smooth blank oval of unmarked skin with no eyes, nose or mouth catching the morning light as a featureless sheen; his left hand seals over her mouth, fingers spread across her cheek and jaw, the heel of his palm at her chin, and his right hand has caught her right wrist and twisted it up and back against her spine, thumb pressing into the inside of her wrist, her hand balled into a fist. His chest is squared to the back of her shoulder blades, his feet planted behind her heels; she has shifted her weight onto her back leg and her front toe is barely touching the pavement. His long shadow falls forward across the yellow of her top and along the base of the wall. Left of the stone, the wall ends in a narrow gap of shadow, and past it the frame opens into the small alley where the orange-white morning light hits one side only, the rest of the lane sunk in a deep hard-edged shade. A black van is parked nosing toward the frame, its slab side in the sun, and its rear door stands swung fully open, one door leaf hooking a hard rectangle of sunlight down onto the cracked asphalt; inside the van's dark mouth a thin cold glint of metal catches along the door frame. In front of the open door stands Rumi, in a short Chinese-style golden dress whose hem stops high on her thighs, the gold silk lit warm on the sun-facing side and nearly black in the shaded folds, its high collar and frog buttons clamped by coils of pale hemp rope cinched in a cross over her chest and upper arms, the rope biting a shallow crease into the gold. Her long purple hair is done in a thick braided ponytail that hangs down her back over her bound arms. Her hands are pulled behind her back, wrists crossed and tied, straining the front of the dress taut across her shoulders. A strip of silver duct tape is wrapped over her mouth and a wider strip is wrapped all the way around her head over her eyes, both strips crinkled and stretched at the edges where they stick to her skin, covering everything above her nose; her black heels press into the asphalt, weight on the ball of the front foot. Behind her a second faceless man in black, his head equally smooth and blank, stands wider than she does with both hands clamped around her upper arms just above the rope, fingers digging in, holding her upright against the drag of her bound arms. The morning sun is the only source: it comes in low from camera left, laying hard-edged shadows of the stone, the figures and the van's door across the ground without a soft edge anywhere, and the shadowed side of every surface falls to near-black. The palette is restricted to the yellow of the top, the gold of the dress and the purple of the braid against stone grey, asphalt grey and flat black of the men's clothing, with the silver tape as the single cold highlight. Bold black outer linework defines every silhouette; interiors are shaded in two flat steps, no mid-tone gradient. Small physics: the duct tape over Rumi's eyes dulls the sweat sheen beneath it, and the open door's shadow cuts the sunlit strip on the ground in a hard broken line. Tense, exposed.
