Tower of Babel, no humans, architecture, colossal stepped ziggurat, monolith, spiraling tower, stone terraces, scaffolding, cranes, unfinished summit, clouds at mid-height, wide shot, from below, dutch angle, low angle, worm's-eye view, harsh sunlight, deep blue sky, atmospheric haze, dust, birds, scale contrast, tiny figures, ant-like workers, desaturated earth palette A steep three-quarter worm's-eye view from the base of a colossal stepped tower of sun-baked mudbrick and fired clay, tilted a few degrees off vertical so the structure's ascending spiral of ramps and terraces recedes upward and outward past the top edge of the frame, its summit cut off — deliberately unfinished — into glare and cloud. The tower is the largest thing in the world: a tapering ziggurat core wrapped by an outer ramp that winds clockwise through at least seven visible levels, each tier edged with a parapet of stacked brick, each ramp surface grooved by the ruts of dragged sledges and pocked with handprints. The lowest courses are thick and human-scaled in the foreground, larger than a person; brick by brick they shrink with every tier until the uppermost visible terrace reads as fine combed texture in the haze. Wooden scaffolding climbs the flat western face in crosshatched ladders and pole platforms, swaying cupped in the upwind side, some of its planks bare and some loaded, and two timber treadwheel cranes jib out over the fifth and sixth terraces with rope lines dropping into the dust below, the ropes slack on the lee side and taut on the windward. Small human figures, nameless workers, are scattered across the ramps and terraces for scale: a line of porters hauling baskets up the second ramp seen in profile against the lit wall; two men at a sled rope on the third tier, leaning into the pull with heels dug; and a single figure standing at the edge of the sixth terrace with both hands cupped to his mouth, shouting upward, his whole body turned away from the viewer toward the summit — everyone in the frame faces inward and upward, no one looks at the lens, and no one turns back. Dust hangs in the air above the ramp where the sledge is dragging, drifting off to the left in the wind. The sun stands low and to the right, off frame, striking the eastern faces of the terraces with hot ochre and deep sienna while the western faces fall into cool umber shadow; the shadowed sides of the ramp stack in receding dark bands that exaggerate the height. The sky behind the tower is a deep, dry, unclouded blue at the middle of the frame, whitening to thin haze at the horizon and towards the crown where a few ragged clouds catch on the unfinished top. Nothing green anywhere. The palette is brick ochre, dust bone-white, rope brown, shadowed umber and that one hard blue — only the sky is saturated, everything man-made is sun-bleached to a matte. An eagle circles at mid-height in the far left of the frame, its wingspan smaller than the topmost terrace, and its shadow runs across the ramp below it as a fast small stain — the revealer that makes the tower's true height legible. A fine dust haze thickens the lower reaches of the tower, softening its base into the plain, so the structure seems to rise out of nothing. Monumental, oppressive.
