parliament chamber, national diet assembly hall, 1 man, middle-aged president, short black hair slicked back, deep frown lines, shouting, open mouth, bared teeth, raised voice, standing at wooden podium, gripping podium edge, both hands on podium, leaning forward, navy blue tailored suit, white dress shirt, deep red silk tie, necktie, 6 summit leaders, men and women, dark formal diplomatic suits, standing in a semicircle behind and around the podium, strained expressions, serious faces, frowned brows, some looking at the president, some looking down, dense crowd of reporters, journalists, beige trench coats, grey blazers, leaning forward, notebooks, handheld microphones held aloft, raised arms, multiple press cameras, DSLR cameras, telephoto lenses pointed at the podium, camera flashes, flash bursts, white light bursts, tense atmosphere, from below, wide shot, crowd, depth of field, indoor, no windows visible, dark wood paneling, high ceiling The camera sits low at podium height and tilts up: the president fills the centre of the frame from the chest down to the hem of his jacket, the wooden podium top cutting across his hips as he leans over it, both palms flat on its front edge, fingers splayed white at the knuckles, his shoulders rolled forward and his chin thrust out so the cords of his neck stand taut above the open collar of the white shirt and the knot of the deep red tie, which swings a centimetre off his chest from the force of the shout. His mouth is wide open mid-bellow, upper teeth visible, brows driven down and together into a hard V, eyes narrowed to slits aimed out over the heads of the press rather than at any one face. Behind and around him, on a slightly raised floor, the six summit leaders stand in a broken semicircle: two men flanking him at the podium's rear edge with hands clasped in front of their waists and mouths pressed into flat lines, a woman on his left with a folder clamped to her chest and her gaze dropped to the podium's corner, another man with one hand halfway to his own tie as though to loosen it, and the remaining two further back in the shadow line with their heads turned toward him, all of them holding still while he does not, their weight settled on both feet, none of them leaving. The foreground is a wall of backs and shoulders: at least a dozen reporters packed shoulder to shoulder below the podium line, their trench-coated and blazered backs filling the lower third of the frame, and above their heads a thicket of raised arms -- microphones thrust up on the ends of fists, a notebook held open and forgotten, and four or five camera bodies hoisted with long lenses all aimed at the president's face. One reporter at the left of the frame has his chin lifted and his mouth half open as though shouting a question. The flashbulbs fire in irregular bursts: their light strikes the president from below and from in front in a cold white blast that blows out the highlights on his forehead, the shirt front and the podium's polished front lip while throwing his eye sockets and the underside of his jaw into hard shadow, and on the leaders behind him each burst rims a shoulder or a cheekbone and leaves the rest of them in the room's warmer dim amber. The lamps high overhead contribute almost nothing at podium level; beyond the flash range the chamber's dark wood paneling and the back rows of the crowd dissolve into grain and unreadable shadow. Palettes are held to the navy and red of the president, the beige and grey of the press wall, the dark charcoals of the leaders, and the flat cold white of the flashes. Dust hangs in the air, caught in the bursts. A single dropped press pass lies on the floor between two reporters' shoes. Tense, urgent.
