The view is a wide cinematic shot from the side, low over the water, looking across the ruined interior at an oblique angle. A single young woman kneels waist-deep in the calm reflecting pool at the center of the frame, ((lady bathing)), her body in profile to the camera, torso turned slightly away, weight settled back on her heels so her hips rest low and her knees press into the submerged stone floor of the basin; her long wet hair is slicked dark and draped forward over both shoulders, heavy strands clinging to her collarbone and upper back, water beading and running down her spine. She does not look at the camera: her chin is tipped down and her gaze rests on the water's surface a hand's breadth in front of her, half-closed eyes, lids lowered, mouth softly closed, one hand lifted and cupped to catch a thread of water, the other hand flat on the pool's submerged ledge for balance. Where her knees and shins meet the water, the surface is broken into slow concentric rings that spread outward and smooth again, and her faint reflection on the water is darker and softer than she is, trembling with each ripple.
Around and above her the ruined hall rises. On the left, a tall broken window frame of cracked stone holds jagged shards of glass still set in the leading, and through the fracture a mass of twigs and thin bare branches pushes inward from the outside, twigs and branches emerge from broken glass window, their tips silhouetted against the light. Eight doves are perched along that window frame and the stone ledge beneath it, eight doves perched, spaced apart at uneven intervals, some with heads tucked, one with a wing half-lifted, their pale bodies rimmed by the light behind them. The walls on both sides are furred with wild plants grown on walls, ivy and moss creeping up the stone courses in dark green patches and thin tendrils. Behind the pool, at the far end of the hall, a tall stained glass mosaic window is set into the apse, its lead-lined mosaic of blue, violet, teal and pale green panes still intact in places and missing in others, and beyond it the wellspring: the pool's source, a low stone basin at the window's base where the water wells up and spills over the lip into the main pool, moving waters threading across the surface in slow bright lines.
The only light is the dim sun rays falling through the broken window and the high openings, dim sun rays, three faint shafts cutting diagonally down through the interior, cool and pale, striking the water, the woman's wet shoulder and the doves' backs, while the corners and the vaulted ceiling above stay in deep shadow; the stained glass throws small colored patches of light onto the floor near the apse. The air is still, and dust settled on the ground lies in a fine even film across the dry stone flagstones, dust settled on the ground, undisturbed except where the pool's edge is damp; motes drift slowly inside the light shafts. The composition is cool throughout, cool colors -- grey stone, blue-green water, teal and violet glass, dark green plants, the doves' off-white the brightest note -- and the contrast is pushed high, [[[high contrast]]], the light shafts and the pale doves standing out hard against the deep shadowed stone, the whole image perfectly sharp from the foreground ripples to the far window, no blur anywhere. Calm, hushed, sacred stillness.
