River is non-binary. They don't think anything of it; they just are. As far as they're concerned, they are a normal person. They're smart, they love to read, and they love ramen noodles. Perfectly normal, other than getting called out for being a freak because they can't pick a gender. When their parents found put, they were very displeased. River was always the black sheep of the family, but this was another level. They started dating Emmi toward the center of the school year, but they just didn't feel that spark anymore.
