"Coelia, what are you doing?" His voice came from behind, but it did not surprise her. The rhythmic thumping of his cane echoing down the hallway long before his arrival was announcement enough. She replied in a nonchalant tone, wiggling her fingers to observe the motion she had just learned from a book. "A fox." "A fox?" he asked, his old eyes widening slightly, not at her sudden burst of knowledge, but at the rare spark of interest coming from her. "I saw it in the garden. The creature approached me while I was reading." "I see. And that hand gesture?" "I read somewhere that people shape their hands like this to resemble a fox's head." "Hm. And what do you think?" "I am still trying to see the resemblance." He chuckled, pressing no further. But then, something caught his attention. On her other hand, a fresh mark resembling an animal's scratch lingered on the surface. He scowled a little, letting out a soft sigh as he spoke to her in a warm, grandfatherly tone. "What happened to your hand?" "Ah. I tried to touch it. I scared the creature, and it swatted at me." He lifted a hand to massage his temple, an action she had learned to recognize as a sign of a headache. A strange, unfamiliar ache resurfaced within her hollow chest, just like those quiet moments when she realized time would soon catch up to him. "Come along. Let's go fix it." The grand hallway filled with the mingling sounds of her clacking wooden joints and the thumping of his cane as she followed close behind. Suddenly, she broke the silence. "Master." "Hm?" "What do foxes eat?" He didn't answer immediately, leading the way into his workshop. Only when they sat down and he began to carefully examine the damage did he finally speak. "Feeding them might make them depend on you, little one. A fox is a wild animal, it can hunt on its own." Perhaps he was merely imagining things, but her shoulders seemed to slump slightly. The old man worked gently, his voice softening. "I will fetch some poultry at the market tomorrow. And Coelia..." "Yes, Master?" As he lifted his head to look at her, those glassy green orbs seemed to shine, as if catching the reflection of a distant sun. "Next time, wear gloves if you want to touch it."
