Across the vast continent, there were monsters that devoured travelers deep within the forests, creatures that fed on magical energy lurking in the wilderness, and ancient ruins where gigantic monsters capable of destroying entire towns remained asleep. Therefore, being called a hero had never been something romantic. It meant danger, battle, and standing before death again and again. And today, two young heroes stood at the entrance of a forest shrouded in thick mist. Kamui Gakupo held a long blade in his hand. The blade was long and slender, its edge reflecting a cold gleam beneath the faint sunlight. His long purple hair swayed gently in the forest wind, while his purple eyes remained calm and focused as he stared into the mist ahead. Beside him, Megurine Luka held a massive scythe. Her long pink hair fell down behind her, and her blue eyes gazed into the depths of the forest. “Is this the place?” Luka asked. Gakupo lowered his eyes to the map in his hand. “Yes.” He folded the map and put it away. “Three days ago, a caravan passing through this forest was attacked by monsters. Yesterday, two adventurers went missing as well.” “So the guild sent us to investigate.” Luka lightly spun her scythe. “Not just investigate.” Gakupo looked toward the forest. “If the monsters have truly begun moving toward the outside, we have to deal with them before they reach the village.” Luka nodded. Neither of them said anything more. The two stepped into the forest at the same time. The canopy blocked the sky, and the light quickly grew dim. The ground beneath their feet was damp and soft, and fallen leaves made faint sounds as they were crushed beneath their steps. The surroundings were strangely silent. No birdsong. No insects. Even the wind seemed to deliberately avoid this part of the forest. Luka suddenly stopped. “Gakupo.” “I know.” He stopped as well. They stood back-to-back. The scythe and long blade were raised at the same time. The bushes suddenly shook violently. A black shadow sprang out! Gakupo stepped aside. A gigantic wolf-like monster rushed past him and slammed violently into a tree behind him. “Three.” Luka said. “No.” Gakupo looked around. “Five.” His words had barely left his mouth when more pairs of crimson eyes appeared within the mist. The monsters slowly emerged. They resembled wolves, but were several times larger than ordinary wolves. Their bodies were covered in coarse black fur, and their claws sank deeply into the earth. One of them opened its mouth. Sharp fangs were exposed. The next moment— All five monsters charged at once. Luka moved first. She gripped the scythe with both hands, spun halfway around, and swung the massive blade through the air. Clang! The monster at the front was forced backward by the impact of her scythe. A deep roar suddenly echoed from somewhere deeper within the forest. The two fell silent at the same time. The sound was nothing like the monsters they had just fought. It was deeper. Larger. The ground even began to tremble faintly. Gakupo tightened his grip on his long blade. “Looks like the real one is deeper inside.” Luka held her scythe horizontally before her. “Then let's keep going.” The two continued deeper into the forest. The farther they went, the denser the trees became. Along the way, they discovered a destroyed carriage. Broken wooden crates were scattered across the ground, one of the wheels had been shattered, and large dragging marks covered the earth. Luka crouched down. “This must be the missing caravan's carriage.” Gakupo examined the surroundings. “There are no bodies.” “Which means…” “Someone survived.” They exchanged a glance. Then they immediately followed the trail. The tracks continued deep into the forest. Eventually, they stopped before the entrance of a cave. Broken weapons and pieces of armor were scattered nearby. More than a dozen members of the caravan were trapped against the rock wall. And standing before them was a gigantic monster. It was a black beast with four arms. It stood three times the height of an ordinary adult. Thick armor covered its shoulders, and each of its four arms held a different weapon. Most terrifying of all was the enormous magical eye in the center of its forehead. The eye stared directly at the two heroes. “Humans.” The beast spoke in a deep voice. Luka frowned. “It can talk?” “Demonkin?” Gakupo stepped forward. “No.” The beast grinned. “I am the monster known among you as the Abyssal Devourer.” It raised its weapons. “Your companions will soon become my food.” Luka rested the scythe on her shoulder. “That's not happening.” She glanced toward the trapped people. “We came here to hunt you down.” The beast let out thunderous laughter. “Just the two of you?” Gakupo did not answer. He simply slowly raised his long blade. “Luka.” “Hmm?” “Save them.” “And you?” “I'll hold it back.” Luka looked at his back. After a brief silence, she smiled. “Okay.” The next moment— Gakupo charged forward. The beast roared and swung all four arms at once. BOOM! Its weapons smashed into the rock wall, leaving enormous cracks behind. Gakupo passed through the falling debris, his long blade clashing violently against the beast's weapons. Clang—! The tremendous impact forced his feet to slide backward across the ground. The beast grinned. “Is that all you've got?” Gakupo raised his eyes. “This isn't over yet.” He suddenly released one hand.
