2boys, captain ahab, ishmael, moby dick, whaling captain, young sailor, one man staring at another, intense stare, dark obsessive glare, ivory peg leg, whalebone leg, gray streaked hair, weathered face, scar on cheek, dark heavy coat, wide brimmed sailor hat, harpoon scar, white cravat, ragged dark jacket, loose trousers, bare feet on deck, from side, profile, dutch angle, cowboy shot, deck of a whaleship, wooden deck planks, rigging, mast, sea horizon, overcast sky, cold gray palette, salt spray, wind blown hair, clenched jaw, furrowed brow, narrowed eyes, looking at another, hand gripping rail, knuckles white, tension, half-closed eyes, sharp focus, dramatic chiaroscuro, storm light, menacing atmosphere
From a low dutch-tilted side view across the deck of a wooden whaleship, the two men stand on salt-scoured planks, the mast and a web of tarred rigging cutting the overcast sky behind them. On the left, the older captain — gray-streaked hair whipped by the wind, a livid scar drawn down one cheek, deep furrows around narrowed eyes, a heavy dark coat with its collar turned up and a white cravat knotted at the throat, one hand clamped on the deck rail with knuckles bone-white — leans his weight onto his back leg, the ivory peg replacing his right leg braced against a raised plank, and his whole body turns toward the other man though his head stays locked in profile, one eye fixing the sailor with a dark, unblinking stare that does not move. Across from him, the younger sailor in a wide-brimmed sailor hat, ragged dark jacket hanging open over a bare chest, loose trousers and bare feet gripping the wet boards, has half-turned from coiling a rope he still holds loosely in one hand; his chin lifts, his eyes slide sideways to meet the captain's stare, his shoulders drawing in a little, mouth slightly open as if caught mid-breath, the rope's free end swaying against his thigh. The captain's stare lands on the sailor's face and the sailor's sideways glance answers it, held a beat too long. Cold gray daylight pours from a break in the overcast above the bow, striking the rail, the captain's white cravat and the sailor's upturned cheek, leaving the deck between them and the lee of the mast in shadow; the wind snaps the rigging and lifts both men's hair toward the stern. The palette is strictly cold — salt-bleached wood, black tar, gray sea and sky, a single flash of white at the throat — with the wet planks darker and slicker than the dry, and the captain's long shadow stretching across them toward the sailor's bare feet. Tense, salt-bitten dread.
