The camera sits low and tilts slightly to the right, looking up past the two children in the lower-left foreground to Milla, who occupies the right two-thirds of the frame from a low angle that makes her height and authority plain. Milla's weight rests on her right leg, the left knee slack and slightly bent, her chin tipped down so that her upturned pink eyes travel down the bridge of her nose to the children below; her lashes half-lowered, one corner of her closed mouth lifted in a light, faintly condescending smile that never opens. Her right arm reaches down and out to her left across the space between them, forearm angled to the children's eye level, fingers pinching the twisted cellophane wrapper of the white lollipop so that the bright white ball sits between her fingertips and the children's upturned faces. Her left arm hangs at her hip, the small orange jack-o'-lantern bucket's handle hooked over her left palm and her fingers curled around it, the bucket's lid open and tipped towards the viewer so the white candies, white cookies and the lidded jar of white pudding cluster in its orange interior catching the moonlight. Long fluffy gold-and-brown hair spills over her shoulders and down her back in loose waves, its ends lifting slightly in the night air; the green-tinted ahoge springs from her crown and leans forward with her chin dip.
The bandages are wrapped in overlapping orange layers over her entire body, the jack-o'-lantern face on the stretch over her chest drawn in darker orange with a carved-tooth grin and two triangle eyes that bulge with the fabric. The bandages are loose and uneven, leaving long gaps at her shoulders, the side of her ribs, her hips and the outside of her thighs where bare skin shows through in continuous pale strips; the gaps follow the path of the wrapping rather than sitting symmetrically. Below, her bare feet stand in pale wood-soled cross-laced sandals, the leather thongs lacing up over her toes and around her ankles. The two children are in the lower left, their backs and shoulders toward the camera: the nearer one in a black cat-eared hood and dark capelet, the farther one in a small pointed witch hat and pumpkin-orange smock, both of their chins lifted and their eyes fixed upward on Milla's face, both smiling with open mouths, their eyes meeting hers along the same line of sight; one of them has both hands clasped at the chest, the other reaches a small hand up toward the lollipop but does not yet touch it.
Behind them the medieval city recedes: gabled timber-framed houses with steep slate roofs and leaning upper stories crowd a narrow cobbled street, a stone well and a fountain in the mid-ground, and a lantern on an iron bracket casts the only warm low light from the left, its glow catching the children's hair from behind and rimming their faces while the fronts of their faces fall into shadow. Above the rooftops an enormous orange full moon hangs in the deep blue-black sky, its light cool and even, glinting on the cellophane of the lollipop and the glossy lid of the pudding jar. The palette is orange, deep blue and moonlit pale: orange in the bandages, the bucket, the moon and the pumpkin smock; blue-black in the sky, the roofs and the shadows; and pale white-gold in Milla's hair, the children's faces, the candies and the pudding. A few thin cobwebs strung between shutters catch the lantern light, wet with dew and brightening where the moonlight touches them. Quiet halloween magic.
